“Painters’ Table … reflects the invigorating range of intellectual conversation still inspired by the painter’s art.”
—Jed Perl, The New Republic
“The glue that holds together an unfathomably huge amount of the dialogue about painting on the internet together.”
—Christopher Lowrance, MW Capacity
“[Painters’ Table] looks for writers who approach art with a personal sensibility, writing about shows that speak to them or relate to their own work, as opposed to merely covering an assignment.”
—Will Fenstermaker, Artspace
2010 – 2018
Created and edited by artist Brett Baker, Painters’ Table was founded in 2010 with the idea that a magazine about painting is created every day on the web. From 2010-2018 Painters’ Table created that daily magazine by highlighting online writing about painting from around the web as it was published. Unique in the arts media space, Painters’ Table featured artist writings on equal footing with articles by established publications and sent more than 1.5 million visits to artist blogs and art websites. The collection of reviews, essays, interviews, summaries, and links to nearly 7000 articles create a comprehensive record of the heyday of the artist-run blog.
2023 and beyond
In 2023, Painters’ Table relaunched with a new design. While continuing to highlight online arts writing and publish new content, the existing archive of content is also being meticulously audited and updated to preserve source links and better connect content. While this process is in progress readers are encouraged to use the search page to find content about specific artists.
