Brice Marden: Interview

Mirabelle Marden interviews her father, painter Brice Marden, about his work and career.

Brice Marden comments: “My work has always been involved with nature, no matter how abstract. Sometimes it’s more formal and less involved with the real world. But there’s always been some sort of involvement with nature… Western art has a certain relationship to nature. And then things got really interesting for me when I got more involved with Asian art… Western artists stand as humans looking at nature; Asian artists try to be in nature. You become one with nature rather than painting a portrait of it. That’s a big shift.” Later in the interview he adds “artists are … independent of time. Your whole position is one of sort of stepping back and not partaking—you’re observing and you’re making things out of this particular observation.”
